About the creator

In the workshop of La Thanatothèque, insect works of art are made with meticulous precision, using the methods of Dr Beauchêne to construct insects, crustaceans and beetles on a metal structure. La Thanatothèque's method combines specimen preparation with silversmithing, producing the most refined and beautiful works of art that could go straight into a Wunderkammer.

The fragile splendour of La Thanatothèque

La Thanatothèque creates wonderful insect works of art using the Beauchêne method. This ancient technique for preparing animal species was invented in the 19th century by French doctor Edmée Francois Chauvot de Beauchêne. The skeleton (or exoskeleton) of beetles, crustaceans, crickets and arachnids is meticulously taken apart, and then all these individual, tiny particles are reconstructed on a metal structure. This special combination of scientific presentation and traditional goldsmithing techniques produces wonderful creations, with which La Thanatothèque aims to showcase the fragile splendour of nature.
